What sleep deprivation can do to parents...

Updated: Apr 11, 2022

Thursday July 2nd, was International “I forgot day”. We’d like to be able to tell you the history of “I Forgot Day”, but we seem to have forgotten 😕. In fact, it was probably forgetting something that made the original creator develop yet another “International day of something". If anyone can relate to the concept of ‘forgetting things' it's sleep-deprived parents! I don’t know about you, but it's amazing how much I now 'remember' the odd things that I used to do after what seemed like an endless series of sleepless nights with a newborn. 😪 When we were designing SleepWellBaby, the best part of the job was talking to wonderful mums and dads about their experiences. One of the most fun exercises we ran was asking them to tell us 'What's the funniest thing that has happened to you due to sleep deprivation?'... Let’s face it, sometimes if you don’t laugh, you would cry!

  • There was the mum that had ordered pizza 🍕, the delivery driver arrived during a feed and she went to the door having forgotten to put away her left breast!

  • Or the mum who had stopped at traffic lights to be informed by the kind driver next to her that she had left her “keep cup” on top of the roof.

  • Then there was the mum who had recently returned to work. She arrived at work only to realise that she had put stockings on, but not her skirt – absolutely true! 😧

  • And dads experience it too... Returning to work after 2 weeks of parental leave, this dad sat down at his desk and realised something wasn’t right. It took him about 5 minutes to realise that he was sitting at his old desk of his former employer who he’d left some time ago... 😲 He’s not alone!
